Researching GPS devices was and is worse than buying a car with all the different product offerings and features plus none of the model numbering seems to make sense which was even more frustrating. You can't tell a low end unit from a high end unit. Garmin is no different either.
Through all of that I am very pleased that I settled on the Garmin 1450. IMO Garmin has made a wonderful device. The UI is very intuitive and very easy to operate even with my big hands. The touch screen is very accurate and responsive. From power up to satelite acquisiiton takes seconds. The turn by turn instructions are very clear but a bit too chatty. We have found the street name pronunciations fairly entertaining. The points of interest have been pretty accurate as has the gas station mapping and the hospitals and such. The bread and butter of a GPS is really whether it can get you where you need to go especially if you as the operator have no idea. I have travelled outside my area of familiarity a few times now and this GPS receiver has been flawless. The screen size is very nice and easy to read while driving.
This unit I purchased has liftime maps and traffic. So the first thing I did was register the unit and update the maps. The web site is pretty easy to navigate on. The map update was simple but just expect it to take awhile. The traffic portion seems to work however to date it has not offered any alternate routes so I can't judge its effectiveness. Nor have I tried the blutooth functionality.
This unit comes with everything you need so unless you want extra power cords or something there is no need for anything extra. The window suction cup works well. The unit fell once but I found I did not seat the suction cup very well. They do have a weighted mount that sits on the dashboard which would be better if you have a co-pilot and you need to look for alternate addresses or something. I found putting the unit in the middle of the window creates an annoyingly large blind spot. So I now put it to the left of the steering wheel.

After using this device for a few weeks now, I want to share my review with you. If you don't want to go spec by spec feel free to jump to the conclusion.
Battery life
Battery will last you a couple of hours if the device is not plugged in. This is a little inconvenient if you want to use your Nuvi somewhere other than your car. If you set the brightness very high, it lasts even less. Battery is something that could definitely be upgraded.
Maps and POI's
Since most of the people who use this device reside in the US, it is logical that Garmin focuses on the American maps quite more than other maps. In my case, I had to buy a map for Mexico and I was a bit disappointed. The house I was staying at does not show up on the maps at all, and the residential complex was built some four years ago. The POI in the Mexican map are a bit scarce, the Nuvi will suggest a pizza place that is 200+ miles away from your current location? I'm not THAT hungry for pizza. There is no lane junction for mexican maps, so you will have to guess the exit, even if you are on a major highway. I was also going to small towns in the chihuahua desert which did not show up on the Nuvi. Some highways and streets do not show up. I do not know if this is because the maps need to be updated by Garmin or because the maps are poorly constructed.
The lifetime map and traffic instance that is bundled with this model is very handy. You won't have to buy a map again unless you are traveling to another part of the world.
Traffic
You can't really count on traffic very much. While it is a helpful feature, it might not be right all the time. Note: There is no traffic providers in Mexico. This feature is only for US and Canada.
Bluetooth
Does what it is supposed to do. Quality is ok, nothing to get excited about. However do realize that using bluetooth will drain the battery even further.
Satellites
Acquiring satellites might be a bit slow. Sometimes, it takes up to three minutes. It might also lose satellites easily if you are not out in the clear.
Processing and rendering speed
This Nuvi is in general a bit slow at displaying the map. When you zoom in and out, it might seem slow at re-rendering the map. It always gets there, but if you need the information fast, it might seem slow to you. It is, however, quite fast at re-calculating routes when you make a mistake.
Extras
You can choose from a series of vehicles to represent your position. This customization is nice, even though I don't really use it. You can also customize the spoken directions. you can even record your own!
Other features
Bundled with you Nuvi, you will also find some extras which come in handy. Calculator, and unit converter are especially useful. However, there is no minus sign on the unit converter, so if someone tells you that the temperature is -6 degrees celcius and you want to know it in farenheit, you're out of luck. The picture viewer is extremely slow with large pictures, so you might need to crop them in photoshop if you want them to load faster. Routes leave something to be desired. There is no option to skip a point if you change your mind later. Also, importing routes from mapquest is buggy at best. Your nuvi might completely re-format the route if it doesn't like what mapquest is showing. Google maps and bing can only export way points which works for most people.
How this device could be improved
If it was faster at loading, acquiring satellites and rendering maps, this device would be the best. I would also look into customizing colors for the routes, for example. The sensitivity of the screen should also be customized as I find myself pressing to hard on the screen.
Conclusion
This nuvi is an amazing tool for the regular driver, especially if it is going to be used in the US or Canada. If you want to use it somewhere else in the world, there might be some quirks to work out. It does what it is supposed to do and the extras make it even nicer. Even if I pointed out some minor quirks with the device, I am very much in love with it and wouldn't leave home without it.
